This small group of our farmers and ranchers didn’t sell out for money offered. They’re standing strong. They use words like “community” and “our future” when talking about this issue. If you’d like to support them:
Attend a meeting on Dec. 9 and 10, 2010 (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) at Nevada Dept. of Water Resources, 901 S. Stewart Street, room #2002, Carson City, NV 89701
“It’s ironic that this mining deal involves the words hope and liberty, because what this really represents is that we are losing both for our country. You can see it on the faces of the farmers and ranchers at this meeting.”
________________________________________________
Part 1
It seems like there’s not much hope for Mt. Hope in Nevada. A brave group of American farmers and ranchers (and so far, Eureka County, NV) are all that is standing between our valuable American resources and water rights, and a Chinese company that has taken a $745 million loan from a bank fully owned by the Chinese Government.
Mt. Hope is about 23 miles northwest of Eureka, NV, and contains the world’s largest and highest grade undeveloped molybdenum project, the Mt. Hope Project.
What is molybdenum? It has the 6th highest melting point of any element, and is used in nuclear reactors, high temperature superalloys, aircraft parts, electrical components, high strength steel alloys, high pressure and high temperature applications, medical applications, gas and oil pipelines to prevent leaks, and as a catalyst in oil refining. It is also a catalyst in liquefaction (helping refiners meet EPA and EEU pollution emission standards) and co-processing, the process of liquefaction of tires and plastics. Demand is increasing in the green industry since it’s used in the production of pipes and tanks that transport biofuels, which are corrosive. Molybdenum is also used in thin film CIGS solar panels, which are less expensive than traditional solar cells.
General Moly is 25% owned by Hanlong USA Mining, a subsidiary of Sichuan Hanlong Group, a Chinese “private enterprise.” Sichuan Hanlong Group recently received a $1.5 billion loan from the Export-Import Bank of China (China Eximbank) to support its investments in overseas mining opportunities, with $745 million towards General Moly. The Export-Import Bank of China is fully owned by the Chinese government and under the leadership of the State Council. It’s a “government policy bank.” Hanlong mining’s website states “China is on a long term growth path to becoming the world’s largest economy” and that Hanlong is “undergoing a period of rapid international expansion.”
China is securing molybdenum resources. China has been the world’s largest producer of molybdenum, supplying almost a third of global supplies. Increasing global demand may prompt China to restrict exports. This may cause the price of molybdenum to rise significantly. In October, 2010, China’s Ministry of Land and natural Resources declared molybdenum a strategic metal.
Our National Academy of Science defines strategic metals as those that are important in use and subject to potential supply restrictions. Strategic metals are critical to our national security. If a foreign company owns OUR supply of a strategic metal, could this company potentially restrict our use of the metal and sell it elsewhere in the world? If Hanlong ever went “belly up,” would the Chinese government bank take over General Moly? If molybdenum is strategic for China, shouldn’t it also be strategic for the U.S.A.? Why are we letting a foreign country have any control of this resource?
General Moly (Idaho General Mines, Inc. in 2004) owns 80% of Mt. Hope Project, and the other 20% is owned by POSCO (Pohang Iron and Steel Company) of Pohang, South Korea. Mt. Hope has about 1.3 BILLION pounds of molybdenum.
General Moly also owns 100 % the Mt. Liberty Project on a royalty free basis. Mt. Liberty is a molybdenum mine 25 miles northwest of Tonopah, Nevada and contains 503 million pounds of molybdenum. General Moly claims these are the two best molybdenum projects in the world, and once production commences, General Moly is expected to become the world’s largest primary molybdenum producer.
It’s ironic that this mining deal involves the words hope and liberty, because what this really represents is that we are losing both for our country. You can see it on the faces of the farmers and ranchers at this meeting.
The only reason I heard about Mt. Hope was because I went to Tonopah, NV to observe the BLM rounding up our wild horses. The Paymaster Herd Management Area (HMA) is about 100,500 acres and the BLM removed 45 “excess” horses, leaving only 23 wild horses on 100,500 acres. The Montezuma HMA is 77,931 acres, and the BLM removed 78 wild horses and 61 burros, leaving only 3 wild horses and 10 burros on 77,931 acres. The BLM claims they rounded up “excess” horses to protect the range from degradation and to strive for a “thriving natural ecological balance.” I’d like them to explain how one horse per every 1,000 or 1,500 acres could possibly degrade the range. A horse only drinks about 15 gallons of water per day.
This is almost ludicrous in comparison to this: the Mt. Hope Project will need 7,000 gallons of water per minute (gpm) for the life of the mine (40-50 years) and will draw 11,300 acre feet annually (afa) from the aquifer. The project layout shows that one waste dump will hold 650 million tons, the tailings facility will hold 435 million tons, another waste dump will hold 125 million tons, and the Ultimate Pit, the open pit, will have 669 million tons of “resource” dug out of it, and will take 1,220 years to reach equilibrium. (In 44-50 years when General Moly finishes mining, and this pit fills with water, for every gallon that evaporates out of it, a gallon of water will be drawn from the aquifer beneath it.)
Considering the issues above, the BLM seems to be in violation of the Federal Land Policy & Management Act of 1976 (FLPMA), which mandates them to manage public lands and various resource values so that they are utilized in the combination that will best meet the present and future needs of the American people…not necessarily to uses that give the greatest economic return.
A General Moly presentation claims the BLM has agreed not to protest General Moly’s water rights, and that the Battle Mountain BLM is “eager” to finish the EIS process and that “the Battle Mountain BLM office has full authority on Record of Decision (ROD).
Although the farmers and ranchers have asked to see a water drawdown map of 5 feet, the BLM has only required General Moly to provide a water drawdown map of 10 feet. The BLM has also not required General Moly to provide a water drawdown map of 20, 30 or 40 feet.
The Mount Hope Project and Liberty Project aren’t mentioned on any of the BLM Field Office websites.
As a matter of fact, it seems pretty hush hush. I tried to get a copy of the minutes of the Sept. 30, 2010 Northeastern Great Basin Resource Advisory Council (RAC) meeting (they advise the BLM), which had plans about mineral projects on the agenda. However, the Associate District Manager of the Elko Field Office told me the minute taker was “swamped” and they did not have a target date to get them completed. This meeting was over 2 months ago…so nobody else in that office can type?
I also asked the BLM if the public could attend the really important meeting that BLM is having with General Moly and other government agencies the week of Dec. 13, 2010 to discuss the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS), but was told by the Battle Mountain Field Office that it was an “internal meeting.” Our tax dollars are paying for the BLM building and government employee salaries, but we aren’t allowed to attend this meeting? By the time the public is allowed to attend public meetings and has the “opportunity to provide feedback” this will pretty much be a done deal.
I happened to notice there was a meeting at the Nevada Division of Water Resources in Carson City, Nevada, regarding 88 water rights applications by General Moly subsidiary Kobeh Valley Ranch LLC. (General Moly also wants to buy up the water rights of nearby farmers and ranchers.) This decision rests on the shoulders of one man, Jason King, Nevada’s State Engineer.
In today’s meeting, Dwight Smith, owner of Interflow Hydrology, Inc. while testifying on behalf of his client, General Moly, referred to the BLM as a “stakeholder.” What is BLM’s stake?
This small group of our farmers and ranchers didn’t sell out for money offered. They’re standing strong. They use words like “community” and “our future” when talking about this issue. If you’d like to support them:

Jesse, Hanlong didn’t have the money for General Moly until they got it from China Export Import Bank. $745 million was specifically earmarked for General Moly. You’d better write to NBC news and tell them they’ve got it all wrong.

You won’t own anything but a piece of paper saying you put your money in the pot. Thats all.
Just because a stock is offered on the US stock market doens’t mean anything…..Its also offered on every stock market around the world.
Where do people get off thinking that they “own” some portion of a company because they bought stock? Unless you own significant or controlling amounts of stock….you are nothing more than a small lender.
Yes General Moly needed money to fund the construction…and to buy off the BLM….and.to seize water rights and supplies, abd to force people off their land. Its quite an outfit……and every bit of it financed by the Chinese government on behalf of a Chinese owned mining company that sells stock in the US…..Gosh…I wonder who owns that mine?

There is a lot of misinformation here. General Moly needed money to fund the construction of the mine and looked at all possible sources. Hanlong was the one that stepped up and provided the cash to move forward with construction.
The company is also not “owned by the Chinese”. It’s a public stock on the U.S. stock market. You can buy the stock yourself and then you will become a part owner.
The U.S. government is free to buy stock in General Moly if they choose to, just like anybody else is free to buy the stock.

Hey Ben! I noiced in your canned statement from the BLM that you mentioned the moly would be exported to Korea. Would that be SOUTH Korea with whom our government just entered into a massive trade agreement with? you know! The one where all tariffs…..those little economic stablizers that protect our wage base and standard of living against under valued currencies and low standards of living in other countries…..will disappear totally over the next five years.
So under this deal……moly will be mined and sold at prices that undercut the US market and our miners, to South Korea for less than its fair market value…….then, subsidies will be paid to General Moly for short selling the moly…….and that bill will be picked up by US taxpayers and General Moly makes out like bandits…..which is what they essentially are.
Isn’t it just damn handy how all this stuff happens “coincidentally”?
And as far as those jobs go…..Moly will be able to bring in its own employees from China under work Visa’s. How many do you think will actually go to US workers? How many of the high level jobs will be occupied by US personnel? Just about none I would estimate.

Dear “Ben,” at least I have the guts to put my whole, real name on what I write. Most of the information in my article was from General Moly’s website, Hanlong Mining’s website and news sources. Please give me any specifics on what you consider to be “misleading” or “incorrect” or “bordering on lying” and I will happy to clarify it for you with research. People can click on the references, read them and decide for themselves.
The farmers who want to negotiate with you want a trust fund established for long term mitigation issues, not personal gain. That is, when a mitigation plan is actually available for any of them to read (wink wink). If you were in today’s hearing, you would know the farmers and ranchers are asking for monitoring, a mitigation plan and safeguards for their community’s future.
I know that General Moly would like people to believe that pumping all that water won’t have an impact. General Moly should do a 5 foot water drawdown map if they have nothing to hide.

Other than that piece of paper…..they own nothing. Not one of them can show up at the mine un-announced and start giving orders…….thats because THEY DON”T OWN IT!

No the article isn’t misleading or you wouldn’t be on here spouting the BLM sales pitch and fluffed up talking points. Nice try at covering and making things look nice and shiney…
The person who wrote the article actually attended the meetings conerning this issue. Apparently those Chinese dudes who testified the first two days are under the impression that they DO own General Moly. Maybe you could talk to them about that and let them know that they don’t. I’m sure they would be interested in your take on this and would be quite surprised to find out that according to you…they don’t.
The farmers and ranchers have REFUSED several offers…not because they want more money…..but because they want to preserve their land and way of life. Not everyone is for sale.
About that water issue……Nevada is facing a huge water crisis. Water from the aquifer bordering California is being drained and piped out to Southern California. Lake Meade is down 132 feet and it isn’t being replenished. Las Vegas is estimated to be out of water by 2012. 7,000 gallons per? I wonder how many taps will shut down behind that one?
As for who owns Genreal Moly…….that would be the Chinese company who got financed for the deal by teh Chinese government.
You need to go back to killing defenseless horses and leave the shuckin’ and jivin’ while we screw the public stuff to Kern’s & West…..they’re that pack of hired PR guns that ran collateral damage for Enron now employed by the BLM to clean up their messes.

This article is incorrect, misleading, and bordering on lying. Neither Mt Hope nor General Moly (GMO) were sold to the Chinese or any other country. General Moly is a publicly traded US company, which means that the GMO stockholders own it. Hanlong is a Chinese mineral and material trading company that helped arrange a Chinese loan to finance the construction of the GMO mine at Mt Hope. They have also agreed to purchase part of the Moly that Mt Hope will produce, they will also purchase 25% of GMO’s stock (they know a good thing when they see it), leaving it 75% owned by all of the other stockholders. Most of the rest of the Moly that GMO will produce from Mt Hope will be sold to some of the largest steel producers in the world, which are located in Korean and Japan. That’s what Moly mining companies do, they sell their moly to the iron companies that use it to make better steel.
No one should be surprised or worried about this. Mining companies always need financing/loans to construct their mines. Hanlong provided the best financing deal. Mining companies need to sell the product that they mine. General Moly plans to do that. That’s how they pay their employees, who will be Americans, and that’s how they will make money. This moly is an export from the US to other countries. Selling and exporting goods to other countries is a good thing. 400 good paying jobs in the US to produce goods that are exported. This is good, not bad.
And with respect to the water, the Mt Hope mine will not have any meaningful impact on the water table. And the “farmers” and “ranchers” are just looking for even more money from GMO. They heard that GMO agreed to buy even more water rights than they need from other “farmers” and “ranchers” so they then show up and say that they also want “to negotiate with GMO” (wink wink). They are just trying to get money that they do not deserve. They want something for nothing and are willing to hold up the creation of 400 good jobs in Nevada in order to get it. Sad really, as is this misleading article. Debbie should be ashamed of herself.

I don’t know how anyone here feels about “WikiLeaks”, but I found this article from the Guardian (UK) VERY scary. It’s about our present and future dealings with China and the things our equally scary government is doing (and NOT doing) to appease them.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2010/dec/04/wikileaks-cables-hillary-clinton-beijing
In the last sentence of the first paragraph Hillary asks, “How do you deal toughly with your banker?” With all due respect, Madam Secretary, YOU DON’T! Your banker deals toughly with you!
I sure wish WikiLeaks would “leak” China, but who would dare “blow the whistle”? It would have to be someone willing to sacrifice their own life and the lives of their family, friends, dogs, cats, and any other person, place or thing they hold dear.
There’s been a lot of Internet chatter about U.S. public lands being offered as collateral to back our massive debt, especially to China and Saudi Arabia. Once the bakery is open, every other nation we owe any substantial sum is going to want a slice of the American Pie.
We’ll be lucky to be left with crumbs and enough semi-polluted water to wash them down!

We’re being sold off because of a plan for GLOBAL government aka NWO (New World Order) aka 1-World Order. There can’t be a strong U.S.A. to fit into this and that’s why we’re being reduced to a 3rd-World Status.
That’s why our politicians (BOTH PARTIES) have largely deindustrialized us, have let the the globalist BANKSTERS and FEDERAL RESERVE rob our nation blind and why they refuse to secure our borders or enforce our immigration laws.
They also want to make sure we have no cohesiveness and that’s why we’re flooded with Immigrants (BOTH legal and illegal) and why they’re being catered to so extensively in THEIR Languages and THEIR cultures.
That’s why there’s so much “Multiculturism.” I’ve noticed in my Home town, that there’s been NO celebration of JULY 4 (the USA Independence Day) for 2 years now, yet there’s all kinds of money for CINCO de MAYO and another MEXICAN INDEPENDENCE Day in September and other “Multicultural events.”
Also beware of this “SUSTAINABILITY.” Whenever you hear “SUSTAINABILITY,” and Global warming-Climate Change- what’s really behind it is the upcoming GLOBAL GOVERNMENT aka AGENDA 21 (U.N.) and the CLUB of ROME (Rockefellers).
This AGENDA 21 (and the rest of the PHONEY environmentalism) is really to steal more money (via more taxes) to support this GLOBALgovernment and tighten control of the population.

Well, Harry Reid was reappointed as Governor of Nevada. He obviously could care less about his state or nation. He only cared about his perks.
And then, I also blame any Latino voters (who are acting solely on a tribal instead of a national basis) and regardless of ILLEGALITY, will do anything possible to sell out this nation to support ILLEGAL ALIENS and their RECONQUISTA-AZTLAN (reclaimation of lost Mexican Territory from the state of CA t CO and TX).
This RECONQUISTA-AZTLAN agenda is being piggybacked onto the NAU (NORTH AMERICAN UNION) plan to merge: Canada, the USA and Mexico (which is closely mirrored by the SPP {Security and Prosperity Partnership) and most of the vast majority of BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES are involved in this.
(That’s why they adamaely refuse to secure our borders and enforce our immgration laws).
This is why NAPOLITANO (TSA) treats our own people like cattle and yet NAPOLITANO still insists on leaving our BORDERS like WIDE-OPEN SEIVES.
And this is why CHERTOFF (who mirrored NAPOLITANO’s immigration-border policies) had these RAPISCAN strip-search machines just magically waiting in the wings for all of us dummy citizens (when NAPOLITANO-TSA) allowed the “UNDIE Bomber” on the plane WITHOUT a passport and despite the father’s warnings.
BOTH POLITICAL PARTIES:
1. Serve the FEDERAL RESERVE and the BANKSTERS (particularly the ROTHSCHILDS and the CITY of LONDON).
2. They refuse to end our disasterous Trade Laws of:
NAFTA (NORTH AMERICAN FREE TRADE AGREEMENT)
CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement)
GATT (General Agreement on Trade-Tarriffs)
WTO (World Trade Organization)
And now: The Korean Free Trade Agreement
Q: Did anyone know that while CALIFORNIA is in such terrible financial trouble that SCHWARZENPIGGER and the rest of BOTH PARTIES allowed this???:
We also don’t even make our own thread anymore.
Folks: If you could demand on your own to your politicians and Prez to end these Trade laws, that would be wonderful.
Q: Whose economy are we actually representing when we buy (MADE IN): China, Taiwan, Vietnam, India, Mexico, Honduras, Canada, Brazil, etc?
INTEL recently built a 5-football-fields length clean room in (HO CHI MINH CITY)–in VIETNAM!
Anyway back to the ILLEGAL ALIEN SITUATION and that corrupt scumbag, HARRY REID, I suspect it is the LATINOS and all the rest of the PRO-ILLEGAL ALIEN CROWD and ILLEGAL ALIENS who voted illegally who re-elected HARRY REID.
They care nothing about this nation and TREASONOUS politicians like HARRY REID and now, we are seeing the results of this. As long as Latinos get their ILLEGAL ALIEN buddies legalized, they could care less about this nation.
If the Politicians actually “represented’ the people and are CONSTITUTIONALISTS, we’d be in much better shape.
AND if LEGAL CITIZENS stopped voting for the FALSE 2-Party Political Paradigm (who DO NOT represent them at all), we wouldn’t be in this pickle right now.
Look at CA: I tried getting people to look at the Governmental candidate, CHELENE NIGHTINGALE (a Constitutionalist), but instead, they revoted in, JERRY BROWN. OMG.
But MEG WHITMAN would have been just as bad. She was also a major ILLEGAL ALIEN supporter. (She said she supported a “Pathway to legalization”) and opposed AZ’s immigration law.
Sorry for rambling, but there was a lot to say and look at miserable shape this nation is in.

When they don’t say a thing about any of this, they’re nothing but a bunch of fakers.
Please also be aware of AGENDA 21 (U.N.) and the CLUB of ROME (Rockefellers).
AGENDA 21 is really what is behind “Sustainability” going green, Global Warming, Climate Change, Earth Day-Hour and the ROCKEFELLERS are also behind this.
This is nothing but a scam for major control of the population (and to reduce it) and to steal more taxes from the people to fund their GLOBAL GOVERNMENT!

Fake paper money buying real assets, yet another violation of our rights. Add it to the list of gov’t violations of our right:
They violate the 1st Amendment by placing protesters in cages, banning books like “America Deceived II” and censoring the internet.
They violate the 2nd Amendment by confiscating guns.
They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by molesting airline passengers.
They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars for foreign countries.
Impeach Obama and sweep out the Congress, except Ron Paul.

Thanks Debbie for a very well written article and for the information. It is amazing to me that because of the mess that the “gangster bankers” has put us into we are now selling all of our (yours, mine, and all of our kids) resources to anybody that has the money to pay the price. One would think that because this is a “Strategic Metal” this sale would not happen, but not with the Gov. that we have now. Anything and everything is up for sale just as long as we can keep the banks open and paying the “high dollar” pay checks to those that are running them. Where is PETA on the issue of the roundup of the horses and burros, where is the Sierra Club and all the other Greenies on the issue of water that will be used from the aquifer, and why is only “ one person” given the right to make the decision for all of us?
Don’t make sense to me either, and dogismyth you are right “Something is very wrong here”.

I don’t understand why a resource of this importance is sold to a foreign entity. Is it because of the environmental restrictions? Molybdenum is an important mineral as you are aware. I just find it confusing why there is no american interest. Are parts of the US lands being sold off purposely to foreigners because of some secret agreeement among governments? Is this related to the financial disaster that has affected most of the world and is largely associated with the mega-banks Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, JP Morgan and the rest of the gangsters?
Make no sense to me. SOmething is wrong here.
