FAN Bulletin 1043: Big VICTORY in WA; a big THREAT in NJ

Feb 10, 2009

Big Victory in WASHINGTON STATE. In the last bulletin (circulated on Jan 20) we indicated that, with the election of a new county commissioner, Skagit County was poised to rescind the decision to fluoridate the county made two years ago. It happened today. Congratulations to all the citizens in the county who refused to give up on this despite the odds against them from their local newspaper and the powerful dental lobby. This gives us all hope.

Big Threat in NEW JERSEY. However, yesterday also brought very serious news from New Jersey. An Assembly bill set to introduce mandatory fluoridation in the state made it out of committee.

We are going to have to fight like merry hell to stop this going through. If you live in NJ please mobilize your friends and neighbors to email, and phone their state legislators. You can get the email addresses of the legislators at this website.

If you live outside NJ please let any one you know in the state that this is happening. If you have any good contacts please email Carol Kopf,  FAN’s state coordinator and media officer, with their contact details (email, phone etc).

We have already seen in Louisiana that the promoters know that they have to move fast and with stealth. Legislators are easily taken in by the spiel from the white coated brigade that this is the best thing since slice bread and that they should do this to help “poor kids.” They need to hear the other side of the story.

We can anticipate that the promoters have already seduced many newspaper editors in NJ and we can expect the same kind of ill-informed nonsense we have seen recently in newspapers from Plattsburg (my reply to their editorial was published on Feb 5), and Schenectady, NY and Skagit County, WA (my letter to the editorial board was neither acknowledged nor published).

For this and other battles, a terrific bit of ammunition came into our hands today. It is a letter from Dr. Hardy Limeback explaining why fluoridation should be halted. If nothing else please copy and paste this to any one you know, and to your legislators (at every level), who continue to think fluoridation is a good idea. You might even try to send this letter to President Obama so that he (or his staff) does (do) not fall victim to the superficial allure of fluoridation.

The total number of people signing the Professionals’ Statement calling for an end to fluoridation has risen to over 2100 and over 104,000 people have watched the Bill Osmunson 5 minute video.

Thank you for everything you continue to do to end this ridiculous practice.
